Finding Easy To Add Content

One technique you can use to add content to your repository is to identify publishers with repository friendly copyright policies and then see if authors at your institution have some articles published with them you can add. You can approach a faculty member with a list of their articles that you might be able to easily add to your repository as part of your outreach program.

Repository Friendly Publishers

This isn't an exhaustive list, and publisher's policies frequently change. You will still need to contact these publishers directly to ask for permission to post articles to your institutional repository.

The publishers listed below are considered RoMEO "green" publishers, allowing authors to archive both pre-prints and post-prints. In addition, the publishers on this list permit the use of the publishers' PDF version of the article if certain conditions are met.

These are RoMEO "blue" publishers that allow you to use the publisher's PDF. They also allow you to archive post-prints but not pre-prints.

These are the RoMEO "yellow" publishers that allow you to archive pre-prints but not post-prints and use the publisher's PDF.

Search Tips

Now that you have an idea of some of the publishers who have repository friendly copyright policies, how can you figure out if authors at your institution have articles you may be able to add to your repository? Most article databases have advanced search features that allow you to search by institutional affiliation and the publisher or journal name.

You can use the links from the list of publishers above to get a list of journal titles for the publisher you wish to research.

Freely Accessible Sources

Publisher Home Pages

You might want to check to see if the home pages for any of the publishers listed above allow you to search their journals directly. For example, a search for "Utah State University" in Bio Med Central found a set of 29 articles.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar has an advanced search which allows you to search by publication title. You can combine a search for a journal title with the name of your institution.

Pub Med

To search by affiliation, click the limits tab. Choose the default tag "affiliation." Then search for the name of your institution as a phrase, for example "weber state university"

Scirus

The advanced search lets you combine a search for author affiliation and journal title.

Subscription Databases

Web of Science

If you have access to Web of Science, you can start by searching Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.

In the general and advanced search screens you have the option to search by institutional affiliation and by the source title (name of the journal).

For example, a general search for Source Title: Astrophysical Journal (a University of Chicago Press title) and Address: Univ Utah results in a list of 55 records. Generally, you will have the best luck when requesting permissions to add articles by the primary author to your repository.

IEEE Xplore

The advanced search for this database allows you to search by institutional affiliation.

Engineering Village

Quick Search lets you combine a search for author affiliation and publisher name.

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA)

Provides an author affiliation search field.

Medline (Ebsco)
